The Pantone 2018 Color of the Year was just announced, and it’s Ultra Violet! This is a very gorgeous color! Ultra Violet is a rich moody purple that evokes a higher level of understanding and creativity. In decorating, a rich violet like this can be used as an accent, or for a dramatic wall color in a dining room or bathroom. This is a bold color for decor, but decorating with Ultra Violet and pairing it with other colors is easier than you may think.

Pantone chose this dreamy color in part inspired by the creative genius of Prince and David Bowie. “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

Pantone's 2018 Color of the Year choice is being enthusiastically embraced by the decor industry. This is a color you can easily fall in love with:

“Deep purples break the barrier of feminine appeal, and broaden its usability into a darker, sophisticated jewel-tone realm. Pantone’s Ultra Violet, the color of the year, encompasses these traits as well as an energetic electricity to add more personality to the home.” -Stephanie Pierce, director of design & trends at MasterBrand Cabinets “This powerful and complex purple sparks creative juices and encourages positive energy. The intriguing and enigmatic Ultra Violet would be an inspiring addition to a home office, or a great conversation starter in a dining area.”-Linda Crisolo, design expert and Merchandising Director at Art.com

"Purple is regency and panache. A complex hue with historical significance. Purple plays well with the grey trend we have seen but also reinvents itself with vibrant energy when paired with with yellow, green and teal. “-Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

Intrigued? Here's how to use Ultra Violet - Pantone 2018 Color of the Year

  • For a smoky and dramatic color palette pair this 2018 Color of the Year with charcoal gray, off-white, and on-trend brushed gold accents.

  • For a beach-inspired coastal color palette, pair Ultra Violet with rich blues and soft whites.

  • For a modern palette, Ultra Violet works well with black, teal, and bright white.

  • A strong jewel-tone color usually needs another color of the same intensity to balance it out, so think charcoal gray, navy blue, or black, in your color palette.

  • Add a touch of Ultra Violet to any room with decor accents like pillows and throws. This is also a great place to add this season’s velvet or faux fur for a touch of luxury.
